Provider licensing

How to become a child care provider

California child care licensing is handled through the Child Care Licensing Program. CDSS licenses Child Care Centers and Family Child Care Homes, and care is limited to non-medical care and supervision for periods under 24 hours.

01

Choose your provider type

Decide whether you want to operate a Family Child Care Home from a residence or a Child Care Center in a commercial setting.

02

Complete orientation

CDSS lists orientation as a key part of the licensing pathway. Orientation helps applicants understand rules, forms, inspections, and responsibilities.

03

Prepare for licensing

The licensing process can include application steps, pre-licensing inspections, background checks, technical support, and follow-up inspections.
